Arthur G. Cleveland, Ph.D.
Dr. Cleveland attended Arlington State College from 1959-1962. Having participated in JROTC in high school, Dr. Cleveland continued his ROTC experience upon enrolling in ASC. He was a member of the Sam Houston Rifle Drill Team in which he served as a squad leader and later as songbird. He participated in the 1961 “long march” to summer camp at Fort Hood.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Chemical Corps. Upon arriving at Fort McClellan to attend the Chemical Officers Orientation Course, he was informed that the United States and Cuba were involved in a confrontation over the deployment of missiles by the Soviet Union in Cuba. After processing he was assigned duties as a platoon leader in the event of an invasion. Luckily that did not occur. Later, he reported to the Army Chemical Center at Edgewood Arsenal, Edgewood, Maryland. He was assigned duties as the Assistant for Long Range Planning, reporting directly to the Commanding General. He often represented the Commanding General in activities with the Air Force, Tank Command, and other Chemical facilities. He earned the Army Commendation Medal for his performance of duty. He served three years in the Active Reserve as a Company Commander of a Heavy Weapons Company.
Upon his release from active duty he became a faculty member at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, where he served for 24 years. He served as Associate Dean of the School of Science and Humanities and Adjunct Professor of Biology and Environmental Science. During his tenure at Texas Wesleyn he earned his M.A. (1968) in Ecology and his Ph.D. (1971) in Vertebrate Ecology from North Texas State University. He earned the Excellence in Education Award from the Board of Trustees and the President of the university in 1988 and was the Educator of the Year for 1979-1980. He served as Interim Dean for the School of Nursing and Science at Incarnate Word College from 1990-1994. Dr. Cleveland is currently the Dean of the College of Science, Columbus State University, Columbus, Georgia, as well as the State Chair for the Arts and Science Deans Advisory Council for the University System of Georgia Board of Regents and as Co-Chair of the State Education Preparation Advisory Council.
Dr. Cleveland has written numerous publications, books, and reports covering a variety of subjects in his areas of expertise. He has been the recipient of various fellowships and grants form such organizations as the National Science Foundation, National Audubon Society, U.S. Air Force, and the Department of the Interior.
Dr. Cleveland considers the highlights of his career, in addition to great opportunities for teaching, to include the opportunity to lead several expeditions to China, other Asian countries, and to South and Central America. He has presented papers in Beijing and walked the Great Wall of China. In June 2001 he had the honor of addressing the graduating class at Hanoi University.
Dr. Cleveland is married and has three children and four grandchildren.
