COL (Ret) Paul E. Berg
Colonel (Retired) Paul Berg grew up in Amarillo, Texas. He graduated with a BA in Business Administration from the University of North Texas in 1993. While working on his master’s degree at UNT he joined the UTA ROTC program as a Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) cadet. As a cadet he served as a company commander and S3 in 1993-94 and as Battalion Executive Officer in 1994-95. He graduated from UNT with his MBA in 1995. He earned an MS degree in 2013 and a PhD in Adult Education from Kansas State University in 2016.
Colonel Berg started his Army career in 1990 as an enlisted soldier, serving as an AH-1 helicopter repairman while attending UNT. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate and commissioned in May 1995 as a Second Lieutenant in Aviation. His first assignment was at Wheeler Army Airfield, where he served as platoon leader, and then later as executive officer for B Co. 214th Aviation Regiment. In 2000, he attended the Aviation Captain’s Career Course at Fort Rucker and CAS3 at Fort Leavenworth.
In 2001, Colonel Berg was assigned to the 159th Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, where he first served as the Operations Officer for C Co. 7-101st and later as Battalion S1. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan in 2002, during Operation Enduring Freedom. He returned to Fort Campbell and took command of HHC/9-101st. In 2003, his unit deployed for the invasion of Iraq with Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Colonel Berg returned to Fort Rucker as a Basic Officer Leadership Course instructor and as AVC3 Small Group Leader. He later commanded D/1-145th Aviation Regiment (BOLC) in charge of training. In addition, while serving at Fort Rucker, he sought out UTA ROTC graduates in aviation training and provided mentorship and coaching.
In 2009, Colonel Berg deployed with the 1st Cavalry Division to Iraq, where he served as Brigade Aviation Officer in the 2nd Brigade to include a combat tour in Kirkuk. He later served as S3 and then as Battalion Executive Officer for the 1-227th Attack Aviation Regiment, with a deployment to Sharana, Afghanistan. He returned to the Command and General Staff College as an instructor. Later, he served as Battalion Commander for the 1-223rd Aviation Regiment at Fort Rucker. After Battalion Command, he served as the Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, Army University at Fort Leavenworth. He also served as the editor-in-chief for U.S. Army Large-Scale Combat Operations Historical Case Studies and editor of the Army University Press’ Journal of Military Learning and Military Review.
He retired from the Army in May 2021 with more than 28 years of service.
His awards and decorations include Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (3OLC), Meritorius Service Medal (6OLC), Air Medal (2 awards), Afghanistan Campaign Medal (2 campaign stars), Iraq Campaign Medal (4 campaign stars), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medal, NATO Medal, Valorous Unit Citation and Meritorius Unit Citations (4), Senior Army Aviator, Army Aircrew, Air Assault, and Airborne badges.
After retirement, Dr. Berg was selected to be an Associate Professor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He continues to volunteer for veteran organizations and assist veterans with PTSD. He is a member of the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars councils. As a proud participant in the UTA ROTC program, he continues to encourage young college students and enlisted soldiers to attend ROTC at UTA.
COL (Ret) Berg has been married to Tanya Berg for 29 years and is the father of two children—Kaela and Logan.
