Leadership Labs & Orienteering 1981-84

LEADERSHIP LABS

Leadership Lab was held every Thursday afternoon. All cadets (Physical Training course students, ROTC extension centers, etc.) were required to come to UTA for leadership lab.  Generally, the afternoon was a day for Drill and Ceremonies, Field Crafts, and other events not suitable or part of the classroom curriculum.

Each semester, during one specific leadership lab, we took over the university pool and set up a slide-for-life course and a rappelling course from the top of the 5 or 6 story building next to College Hall (I don’t remember what the building name was). It had a wall facing College Hall that had no windows or facings and was ideal for rappelling.

This was obviously done for the field skills of the cadets, but was also a very good on-campus recruitment tool. Several of the university professors participated with us.

ORIENTEERING:

During the 1981-1984 time period, we also created an orienteering team. They participated in orienteering meets around Texas. Beginning in the second year of their competition, we hosted our own competition that brought both junior and collegiate orienteering teams to our campus.
