LTC (Ret) Michael W. Morrow
Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Michael W. Morrow began his studies at The University of Texas at Arlington in 1969. Born and raised in North Richland Hills, Texas, he attended Richland High School. Mike was a member of the UTA Corps of Cadets from 1969 to 1974 and a member of the Sam Houston Rifles Drill Team for all four years, commanding the team his senior year. He graduated from the Army Ranger School, in lieu of ROTC Advanced Camp, between his junior and senior years. Mike graduated from UTA in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration. In 1977 he earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Pepperdine University in 1977.
Following his graduation from UTA, Mike was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in Air Defense Artillery. His first duty assignment was with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii from 1974-1980, where he served as a Redeye Platoon Leader and as an Executive Officer for a Vulcan Battery. After graduating the ADA Advanced course as Distinguished Graduate, he commanded the first Improved HAWK battery assigned directly to XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, NC.
From 1980-83, he served as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at North Carolina State University. He then moved to Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX, where he served for three years (1983-86) as a Readiness Coordinator on the 5th Army Staff. He completed his air defense assignments with a tour in Korea (1986-87) as the sole U.S. liaison officer to the U.S. Air Forces Korea and the Republic of Korea Army. From 1987-90, Mike served as the Director of Research/Joint Force Employment Instructor on the faculty of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
From 1990-93, he was assigned to the Army Element of U.S. Space Command as a Command-and-Control Warning Officer, followed by assignments at the Pentagon (1993-95) as a Space Operations Officer and as a senior advisor on classified space programs to the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Space. As a Space staff officer, he played a vital role planning for the integration and use of space systems during Operation Desert Storm; provided oversight and reviewed Army special programs for space and information operations application by STRATCOM; wrote the National Security Space Policy and participated in multiple demonstrations of operational capabilities ranging from directed energy to surveillance and reconnaissance at the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
After retiring from the Army, Mike successfully managed multi-million-dollar projects at the National Reconnaissance Office, National Security Agency, and Central Intelligence Agency across a wide variety of disciplines, including Measurement and Signatures Intelligence, Space Operations and Space Control, Information Operations/Cyber Warfare, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Missile Warning/Missile Defense, and Special Technical Operations.
Among LTC Morrow’s awards are the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three awards of the Army Meritorious Service Medal, multiple Army and Air Force Commendation Medals, and numerous service decorations. He also earned the Ranger Tab, the Senior Air Force Space Badge, and the Army Parachutist badge.
Mike credits his participation in the UTA ROTC program with much of the success he enjoyed in his early military career. He is a life member of the Sam Houston Rifles Alumni Association and the UTA Cadet Corps Alumni Council. He has also been a regular participant in UTA Military Department Hall of Honor events.
Mike has been married to his college sweetheart Charlene Morrow for 50 years. They live in North Richland Hills, Texas.
